Rainwater harvesting systems can be supplemented by municipal or well water in times of low rainfall.  RMS uses backflow preventers to avoid contamination of the fresh water supply by harvested rainwater.  For example, an irrigation system has the potential to allow contaminated water from the lawn to flow back into the pipes that deliver drinking water.
